Volunteer with LITA

Love Is The Answer

One-to-One..Friends for the Elderly
Since 1975

LITA -Love Is The Answer- has been in existence since 1975, providing volunteers to be one-to-one friends with elderly people in long-term care facilities. These long-term friendships aid in promoting the physical and mental well being of elderly residents through the lessening of isolation and loneliness.

LITA has volunteers in 35 skilled nursing and residential facilities throughout Marin. A formal request is sent to the LITA office from a facility wanting a LITA volunteer to visit one of its residents. This request includes information about the resident, so that they can be matched with an appropriate volunteer.

Many of these elderly residents have no one, or their families live too far away. Residents look forward to these weekly visits from a LITA friend. For this reason, a commitment to establish a long-term friendship, with visits of at least 20-30 minutes per week, is required. In addition, a TB test-or proof of a recent one-is also required (not necessary if under 12 years of age).

Volunteers include working adults, families with children and young people. Prospective volunteers can call or e-mail the LITA office for information and/or to make an appointment for an interview. It is necessary for LITA to obtain some background information, personal interests, etc., to be able to make a match with a suitable facility resident. The prospective volunteer will also be asked to show a photo I.D. and provide the phone numbers of two personal references.

LITA's Pet Connection volunteers include their special pets as part of their weekly visits. This program is especially important for people suffering from depression. If you wish to visit with your pet, the pet should accompany you to the interview. Current vaccinations are required.

Becoming a LITA volunteer can be an enriching and rewarding experience. You need only show up and share yourself, whether it's talking, walking, playing cards, watching TV, reading, drawing-whatever your shared interests might be.
